Deep in the museum, hidden beneath the annals of time and buried in growing obscurity, lies a once legendary blade, now relinquished to a paperweight, sentenced by the admins forever to gather dust. Remembered only in the xp it gives, it’s rendered an echo of its former glory, its power rended at its peak, renting its place in our museums for completion and completion alone. This golden blade, forged of the flesh and souls of 1.2 million pigs, made from massacre that predates the sword of the golden king and the aspect of the newborn dragon, would come to be the strongest weapon in skyblock two separate times, before one small change would send it to its grave and a single iron sword would nail its coffin shut.
This is
Pigman Sword:
Skyblock’s First Legend
The date is June 11, 2019, and the Hypixel Network is set to release a game which would go to become not just its most popular game, but arguably the Network’s most defining game in modern years as well. Back before skyblock, Hypixel was a different place, its largest game being bedwars and much of the player base being more casual players. Hypixel was a minigame server, where players would go to play and have fun. Before bedwars, skywars was dominant, and before skywars, there was megawalls. And this is where our story begins.
Megawalls was one of the defining games in early hypixel history, with four teams of 25 players each, separated by grand impenetrable walls into identical quadrants, each with their own wither to defend once the walls all fall.
Players would collect resources from an almost fully mineable arena and with it make gear and defenses and anything minecraft would allow. Safe for a period of grace where they would prepare for war. And then the walls fall, nothing between them, the four teams could all begin their clash, throwing their bodies past enemy lines in hopes to strike their enemies’ wither, knowing if they died they had their own wither that would revive them so they could try another time.
And eventually, slowly each wither would grow weaker and weaker, until the first one would die. Unable to revive, its team could no longer afford a reckless death, for once their last member fell they will have lost the game. The same would happen for the second wither to die, and the third. But once the fourth, final, wither dies, the death match begins, and starvation would face all who failed to make it to mid to join in a final battle of survivors. Every death here is irreversible, every duel your grave or your glory, a question you must answer with strength and with wit, will you last? Survivors fall, their teams with them, and whoever stands at last will bring victory for their friends who passed.
And that is Megawalls, war, strategy, gathering, tragedy. Except it’s not, it’s not even close to what Megawalls is, for we have left out the classes, the core of every individual’s combat abilities, and it is from one of these classes our legend originates. Over a quarter score before our legendary sword’s skyward debut, its namesake had already burned scars of infamy, domination upon release, the Pigman scorched fear into every wither’s bones.
Its kit gave it great healing and defense, a good sword and speed pots. Its abilities included one that gave allies regeneration and resistance occasionally when you hit an enemy, and another that gave itself resistance ii when it fell below 5 hearts. But, the ability I care about today goes by a familiar name. Burning Souls summons a ring of fire around the player dealing damage over time and granting the user strength ii for a short time.
*I should note, i did not play megawalls at the time, i’ve looked through ancient forum posts and an old unupdated wiki page.
Nerfs upon nerfs were handed out to Pigman, and now it shares the same obsolescence as its own game. sry megawalls players i needed a transition out of megawalls
But now, and arguably since late 2014, Minecraft was lulling to a dormancy and retreating from the forefront. Other games took front stage and minecraft’s growth was slower. After Microsoft bought Mojang, Minecraft was cast into its dark age.
And it was during this dark age that hypixel would fight minecraft’s wane and release two of its most iconic games. The first was Skywars, a free for all on islands in the sky, with chests containing loot for players to collect and kits that give players items to start with.
And after skywars came bedwars, a game on floating islands, almost like a fusion of Skywars and Megawalls, you had to defend your bed with resources bought from your base and destroy everyone else’s bed to permanently kill them.
Terrible summaries aside, it was in these games a legend emerged. One who was unkillable. Who would be the first to get a thousand consecutive wins in bedwars. One who would only be bested if you trained another hundred years. Technoblade. A fairly small youtuber at the time, known within the community, but only starting to grow beyond Hypixel.
In 2019, something special started to happen. Minecraft started to pickup again. It gained attention from some of the largest creators of the time, and one of them would organize an event. Featuring youtubers from all of Minecraft, Minecraft Monday would go to shape Online Minecraft as we know it now. One nobody, a small youtuber with reportedly great elbows and a pig skin, would dominate the first event. Now know to millions more people, not only would Techno grow, but so would the Hypixel Server with him. And it would happen week after week. Pig plus. plus plus. plus plus plus.
*skyblock released before minecraft monday, however this flows better narratively sorry lol
And it is now, at the zenith of the minecraft revival, we would see Hypixel’s pièce de résistance release to the world. Skyblock would release on the 11th of June, with only 2 legendary items: The Runaan’s Bow and the Pigman Sword.
The pigman sword had 200 base damage and 100 base strength. It was far superior to any other sword. Not only that, but it had an ability, an echo of the pigman’s past, inspired by megawalls, Burning Souls. With damage over time and a defense boost but costing some mana, it might have seen occasional use if magic damage had worked correctly, however right now it’s damage is too pitiful to be any more than an afterthought for anyone wielding the Pigman Sword
Skyblock would immediately flourish, bringing in tens of thousands of players, many of whom were longtime hypixel veterans, but were new players, only just introduced to hypixel flooding in from the upstream wave of hype for our decade old indie block game.
The millions of viewers of Minecraft Monday who were captivated by this pig man who dominated and demolished their favorite youtubers would find an array of videos recently released by him, those that weren’t Minecraft Monday would be his Skyblock series. And it drew people in. It’s what got me into skyblock. And to this day, it has guided my gameplay and play style.
It is what started me on this quest.
Over 5 years ago, I would make it my mission to forge the deadliest sword in skyblock.
But by then, when i made that vow, it had already been usurped. Twice.
Not even a month since release, a king who still reigns, the prestigious golden child, a blade perfect for clickbait, would emerge from shadows of crime in a musty basement on the 2nd of july. And the Midas Sword was a joke. A waste of a dark auction spot. Worse than worthless because no one needed to do more damage nor did they have the 50 million coins required. Even worse, players couldn’t outbid themselves yet, so you had to either have a second person with 50 million to help you or win a bidding war against another person who was dumb enough and rich enough to waste a full bank on “silly number go up”
And even though it didn’t matter at the time, midas was better than pigman sword.
Midas was now the sword tryhards would grind for and newbies would aspire to.
But at least pigman still held its place.
Until the End Update
This update would mark the end of the Pigman Sword’s reign.
Two monumental additions would body the pigman sword’s viability, efficacy, and strengths, the first of which is obvious - a new weapon not only with stats that rival it’s own, but is also obtained much more readily from a much more lucrative grind.
In the grind to get Superior Dragon Armor, the new best set in the game, players were likely to drop at least one aspect of the dragons before completing the set.
Though debates raged over which was better, it was almost consensus that they were terribly close, the largest difference was that one was easier, cheaper, and faster to get and use, and the other was the pigman sword.
However this was one of two additions that made this update end the pigman sword. The second and less obvious one is the summoning eye grind. This was one of if not the first major money making method to gain widespread popularity. Now, early and mid game became a race to 13k damage, where a sword that’d take days-weeks of minions to obtain would be far too slow. The aspect of the dragons was perfect for this, cheap and effective.
Not only were players funneled into using the easiest to obtain weapons, however zealot grinding made the 50 mil midas not only achievable, but reasonable too. There was no reason to use a pigman sword when the better luxury was now affordable and its equal was far more accessible.
It would be this way for months, overshadowed and niche.
Some small solace would come with the addition of pets, with the pigman pet making pig minions faster and the sword stronger, but it still would never beat the midas’s power or the aspect’s affordability.
It would never again rise to melee dominance.
and yet it was a fraction of its coming power.
July 1st, 2020.
Skyblock release 0.7.11
Everything would change.
Ability scaling would be fixed.
Magic and spells were barely more than a party trick for the first year of skyblock. A right click, mage-esque play style had not really existed due to both a lack of damaging abilities and damage. Mana was used for off hand mobility or support with weapons like the aspect of the end or zombie sword respectively.
This date would mark the birth of the mage.
Magic damage would increase by orders of magnitude, players rushed to experiment and develop magic builds, they knew dungeons would be coming soon, and they wanted to wield more than blade or bow against the legions buried in the catacombs.
And Burning Souls would be unmatched. With high damage, it was already substantial, but its low mana cost coupled with its nonexistent cooldown would make it unmatched in dps.
Just under a year since the Midas dethroned it, the Pigman Sword had come back
And not even a week later, they released the Catacombs.
It was not only the best mage weapon of the time, but the best weapon, melting through F3 minibosses in seconds while providing safety to the user. Not even King Midas or his famed sword withstand the inferno. Video after video would be made about the pigman sword, you’d see its signature pigman fire magic anytime you saw a mini.
The devs tried to nerf it a week later, by nerfing the base ability damage, but for almost 4 more weeks would it reign supreme decimating everything in its fiery vortex.
Until the 30th
When in just one day it would be sacked back to irrelevancy by a new 5 second cooldown levied on its ability.
I hate to say this is where it ends, however it has not received any changes for over 4 years, the most recent one was a reduction in cata req and starring cost on march 30th, 2021.
Its fire burned bright but it was smothered by the admins. Ashes cast aside and forgotten.
Just another chunk of debris in the annals of the museum.
